Liptov Village Museum

Museum of Liptov Village in Pribylina, the youngest museum in Slovakia was opened in 1991. The open-air museum differs from other museums in Slovakia by the fact that in addition to objects of wooden folk architecture, there are built homes of higher social classes of the this region in the past.

The settlement structure is similar to larger Liptov municipalities with town privileges and prerogatives. In the middle of the village there is a large open space called rínok where residents gathered and where the markets and fairs were held.

The open-air museum features Gothic-Renaissance mansion from the village Parížovce deemed the oldest squire seat of the Liptov region from 14th to 16th century, and one of the most valuable historical buildings in the flooded area. The oldest Gothic part can be dated back to the first third of the 14th century. After 1484 the mansion was rebuilt as a hunting lodge and from this period original wall paintings with the motif of a raven with a ring on a twig have been preserved. Today's appearance of the castle got after the last reconstruction in the second third of the 17th century. The exposures include examples of living and way of life of the higher social classes of the population in the past.

Just as it was in the past in Liptov region indeed, today in the museum in a modelled rural area it may be shown social and societal differences in culture and way of life, from housing of the poorest classes of the village population to housing of the richest.
