Kosice Airport

Kosice Airport is a public civil airport for domestic and international air traffic. It provides regular and irregular air transport. Immigration and customs control is available 24 hours. The operation is carried out according to the rules and instrument flight rules for visual flights.

History

Košice airport started to be constructed on the space behind the city district Barca in 1950. Three years later, runway in the length of 2000m and taxiways were put into operation. In 1954 first part of the building for passengers, hangar later tower for air traffic control were built.

In the mid 60s the growing traffic necessitated the extension of the building apron for passengers. In the years 1974-1977 the runway was extended by 1100 m and at the same time energy system and building lighting system was reconstructed.

New terminal

One of the most important days in the history of Košice airport was undoubtedly December 21 in 2004, when new terminal which is connected to the existing terminal was officially handed over. It is a single-storey, air-conditioned, wheelchair hall with a two-storey central part. The hall offers sufficient space for the equipment of foreign and domestic departures and arrivals, premises for airlines and travel agencies, room for mothers with children, room for meditation and comfortable business lounge. The building provides comfort to passengers in the form of restaurant services, car rental and gift shop.

Kosice Airport in technical and safety aspects comply with the European and international criteria. With the new terminal, the city of Košice is ready for accession to the Schengen area to separate passengers who are directed to EU countries and travelling to countries outside the Union.
