Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Built in the first half of the 13th century, this Romantic-era monument originally served as a three-nave Dominican basilica dedicated to St. Nicholas – today it is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Behind its Classicist façade lies one of the best-preserved Romanesque sacred buildings in Slovakia.

Although the church suffered two fires (the last in 1806), the subsequent Classicist reconstruction significantly shaped its current appearance – including the characteristic central tower with two lower turrets and the elegant façade lines.

The interior combines antiquity with later modifications: a Classicist main altar from 1811 with an altar painting by Vincent Fischer, Baroque side altars, a set of three confessionals from the late 18th century, and a rare Late Gothic baptismal font.

This church is one of the most significant reminders of the medieval and modern history of the town – its massive structural layers testify to Banská Štiavnica’s importance as a center of spiritual, cultural, and architectural development.
