NEW CASTLE - BANSKÁ ŠTIAVNICA

The beautiful view of the historic center of Banská Štiavnica is just one of the experiences offered by a visit to the New Castle. A six-storey Renaissance fortification building built in 1564-1571 as an anti-Turkish watchtower in the system of fortifications of mining towns. It also served as a city clock. It is currently part of the Slovak Mining Museum. The exhibition presents the history of anti-Turkish wars in Slovakia. The visitor will learn about the importance of Banská Štiavnica and other mining towns in the fight against the Turks, about important periods during the Turkish expansion and its effects on life in mining towns. The most interesting exhibits include a life-size statue of the Turk by Dionysus Stanetti and the weapons of the warring parties. On the top floor is a plastic map showing the development of Turkish expansion and models of some anti-Turkish fortresses. A visit to this exhibition is also suitable as a supplement to the study of the history of Slovakia during the Turkish wars.

Information about the building: The new chateau was originally an anti-Turkish watchtower - a massive prismatic tower with four corner bastions, built in the years 1564 - 1571 as part of the fortification system of the town of Banská Štiavnica. The whole system (2nd half of the 16th century) is significantly imprinted with the seal of Italian architects working at the time at the imperial court. The building itself served as the main protective bastion due to strategically advantageous location and was also part of the signaling system , which was used to report on the impending danger from Pukanec to Ľubietová. Until 1848, there were 21 works around the chateau, and by the middle of the 18th century, Nový zámek was also a gunpowder depot for Banská Štiavnica mining. Due to its location and place of "living hours" - every quarter of an hour, the trumpet was announced to the population that the fire guard was watching, and every hour the bells rang again to tell the exact time. In addition, there was a flap that called miners to work. In a later period, it was used as a gunpowder depot for Banská Štiavnica mines, until half a year. 18th century It became the seat of the fire patrol and became famous as the so-called live hours.
