Church of St. Catherine

Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria – a pearl of Late Gothic architecture, vaulted with a delicate star-shaped net vault that seamlessly extends from the nave to the presbytery – a unique type of building in Slovakia. Built between 1488 and 1491, it was consecrated on November 16, 1500, by Bishop Gregory.

It lies directly between the Holy Trinity Square and the Town Hall Square and is referred to as the “Slovak” church, since sermons have been preached here in Slovak since 1658. Beneath the church is a crypt where mayors and prominent townsmen were buried.

The interior preserves precious artistic treasures: a cross, a Late Gothic statue of the Madonna and a stone baptismal font from the 15th century, an organ by local masters from the late 18th century, as well as a Baroque altar from 1727 with a painting of the Betrothal of St. Catherine by Johann Georg D. Grossmair. Also remarkable is the mural of the Last Judgement on the southern wall of the presbytery – one of the largest of its kind in Slovakia.
