Church of St. Bartholomew

The Parish Church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle is located in the town of Prievidza, on Pribina Square. It is originally a Gothic building from the late 14th century, which was modified and expanded in the 17th century. The parish in Prievidza was established at the beginning of the 13th century. In 1321, the castle parish ceased to exist, and shortly thereafter the construction of a new – city – parish and parish church began. Over the years, the church underwent various changes. The interior has not been preserved in its original state; only some Gothic church items remain, which are still in use today. The interior was supplemented with an organ. The church tower gradually received bells that called people to services and also served as signaling devices in case of disasters. In 1523, the fresco “Descent from the Cross” was created on the north side. On the south side is the fresco of St. Christopher. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the church was restored several times. An interesting feature of the exterior is the placement of a sundial. After the roof reconstruction and other repairs, St. Bartholomew’s Church was designated a national cultural monument.
