Rock dwellings in Brhlovce

The rock dwellings in Brhlovce are undoubtedly among the most significant remains of folk architecture. It is said that they have their origins in the protection of the local population against the raids of the Turks in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since there is well-processed ash and dust here - tuffite and tuff, and the village and its surroundings experienced rich volcanic activity in the Tertiary period, a unique opportunity arose to use them. And so the people of Brhlovč carved out unique living and economic spaces in their settlements. Stone was a suitable material not only for the creation of original dwellings, but also provided the population with a source of livelihood. In the nineteenth century, stonework became the most important form of existence for the local people, who learned the technique of quarrying and processing stone from the Italian builders of the local mansion.
