PEZINOK CASTLE

Pezinok Castle is a Renaissance castle on the outskirts of the city in the park, originally a medieval residence with fortifications using water sources - a water castle. It is located at the southeastern foot of the Little Carpathians, in the town of Pezinok.

Already before 1271, they built a castle in Pezinok, which, like the other castles in the area, was attacked by the troops of Přemysl Otakar II. It was surrounded by two ditches filled with water from the Cajlan brook. There were two drawbridges above them. In the 17th century, the castle was abandoned and repaired in 1718 Ján Pálffy. In the 19th century, the Pálffy family had two modifications - r. 1844, and especially after 1875, when part of the castle was completely rebuilt into a romantic building. Only after these modifications of the castle to a manor house was the defensive character of the castle suppressed. In 1875 a fire destroyed the northern economic part of the castle. At the end of the 19th century, the southern part was remodeled in a romantic and Neo-Renaissance style. This form has been preserved to this day. The castle underwent major alterations in the years 1940-43. Despite many reconstructions, the castle has preserved the medieval appearance of a water castle, now unique in Slovakia.
