KRASNA HORKA Castle

The castle that is a national culture heritage lies 8 kilometres from Roznava, near the village Krasnohorske Podhradie. Originally Gothic castle from the 14th century towers of the high steep conic hill. It was rebuilt into a fort in Renaissance style, later on into presentable residence of nobility. Until 1812 the castle was inhabited. The last owner Dionyz Andrassy turned the place to a family museum and since 1906 it has been open to public.

A part of Krasna Horka Castle is a mausoleum at eastern end of the village. There are marble sarcophagi in it. The mausoleum was built by Dionyz Andrassy who lived in Vienna but loved Gemer area and wanted to have been buried in there. Against his family wishes he married Czech singer Frantiska Hablavcova. They nearly disinherited him. They lived in an extraordinary good marriage, however, without family, until she died in 1903. During the following year he thoroughly reconstructed Krasna Horka and made it into a museum dedicated to his beloved wife. Thanks to him there have been exhibits of outstanding historical and artistic value collected in there. The collection in Krasna Horka has the largest exhibition of historical works in Slovakia.

In 1946 the reconstruction works started in the castle. It is open to public as a museum of period furniture and equipment.

In March 2012 Krasna Horka Castle burned down and currently ongoing restoration of the castle!
