Church of St. James

Church of St. James in Levoča, originally in gothic style, is the second largest church in Slovakia, national monument and a building of a particular art-historical significance.

Originally the church from around the year 1280 stands on its place. The current church was built from the first third of the 14th century. The church was modified at the end of the 15th and early 16th century, partly in the 17th century.

In the temple you will find the ornamental late-Gothic painting, several frescoes groups: on the northern wall of the left side of the ship in two rows of seven works of mercy and the Seven Deadly Sins (around 1385), a large series of 20 scenes of the legend of St. Dorota (about 1400), on the closure of the south nave the Calvary (around 1380). Pastophorium from the late 15th century is in the sanctuary.

The temple is a unique collection of twelve medieval gothic wing altars, standing at the original location. Such a collection of Gothic altars are not even in the world's largest galleries.

The church features also the tombstones since 1392, particular of Turzo family from the 16th century, epitaphs and mortuary (especially from the 17th century), Gothic font, Renaissance pulpit from 1626 (K. Kollmitz), Renaissance organ from 1615, goblets, Ciborias and monstrances. The most valuable works of the temple include Equestrian statue of St. George. The most likely it is the work of Master Paul from around 1515.
