Čierny Hron Railway

Ciernohronska (Black Hron) railway is a narrow-gauge forest railway in the Slovak Ore Mountains, which drives on the route Chvatimech - Hronec - Čierny Balog - Vydrovo.

Railway was originally built to improve transport of harvested timber, since the capacity and quality of transport of wood in the traditional way - rafting failed to meet the needs of the growing industry of the country. It was necessary to ensure the quality and smooth transport of timber throughout the year.

The construction of the main section from Hronec to Čierny Balog, 10.4 kilometers long, began in 1908. Forest Railway has entered into the history of the Slovak National Uprising in 1944, when it provided import of rations and ammunition to the mountains for the guerrillas.

Nowadays, parts of a historic passenger coaches, including restaurant wagon is designed as summer sightseeing carriages to reinforce driving experience in nature. However, the interest of passengers exceeds the supply and ČHŽ currently provides reconstruction of other coaches for operation.

Black Hron Railway runs daily during the summer season from May to September 15. It drives on the renovated section of track from Chvatimech to Čierny Balog and to Vydrovská valley (total 14 km). From September 16 to April 30, ČHŽ runs every Saturday on the route Chvatimech - Cierny Balog (12 km). Special rides can be ordered at any time!
