Rye Island

Rye Island is located in southwestern Slovakia on the border with Hungary and is considered the largest river island in Europe. From the south it is bounded by the River Danube, by the Little Danube from the north and in its the eastern part from the city Kolárovo by the river of Vah, called Danube Vah in that part. The area of the island extends to countys of Bratislava, Trnava and Nitra and in districts of Senec, Bratislava countryside, Dunajska Streda and Komarno. Rye Island is the largest reservoir of drinking water in Slovakia and one of the most fertile agricultural areas.

Among the most important resorts of Rye Island we can include Dunajska Streda, Velky Meder with their thermal pools, which are visited even by foreign tourists. Besides them, there is a thermal spa in Topolniky and Komarno. The bank of the Danube, called. Small Rye Island, is also a sought after location where a pleasant and quiet environment waits for visitors. The favourite activities of this region include rafting on the Little Danube allowing observation of the beautiful nature of the surrounding floodplain forests. Water mills representing an inherent part of the history of the island belong to the attractions of Rye Island.

The bicycle paths in the island lead along the Danube Rye to Austria. During the cycling tour, you can see Gabcikovo Water Work, situated by the cycle path. Sightseeing cruises on the Danube River is another pleasant possibility for spending leisure time.
