Western Tatras

Are you attracted by mountains and high peaks of Slovakia? Spend your holidays in the second highest mountain range in Slovakia - the Western Tatras which are part of a whole Tatra Mountains. A little lower than the High Tatras, they offer enough over-two-thousand-peaks, mostly belonging to a 35 km long twisty mountain ridge. The highest peak - Bystra towers paradoxically south of the main ridge. In the Western Tatras you will see rather flat grassy ridges, unlike the sharply broken down rocky ridges of the High Tatras. Koprova Valley lying below the peak Krivan separates these two mountain ranges. Right inthis area there can be found the easternmost tourist resort Podbanske with accommodation in wellness hotels, pensions and cottages.

Most of the area belongs to the region of Liptov whose centres lie at the southern foot of the mountain range, but probably its most beautiful part - Rohace in the northwest of the mountains lies in the Orava region. Toward the west the Western Tatras neighbours with Choc Mountains offering beautiful valleys, with Sucha Valley between these two mountain ranges.

The village of Pribylina where during your stay you can visit the Museum of Liptov Village has a good access to eastern and southern part of the Western Tatras. Rackova Valley with some mountain hotels is a very popular tourist resort near Pribylina.

Another popular valley, the Ziarska Valley can be found north of the village Ziar below the western foot of the hill Baranec. It is also possible to go on a hike to the valley also from the town of Liptovsky Mikulas which is the largest city near the mountains and offers accommodation in various hotels and guest houses. Offering pleasant refreshment in summer, the Liptovska Mara reservoir lies next to Liptovsky Mikulas. Throughout the year you can visit the largest water park in Slovakia – Aquapark Tatralandia.

The most glamorous part of the Western Tatras, called Rohace, is accessible from tourist resorts in Orava region, among which the village of Zuberec stands out, known not only as a good starting point for hikes in the Rohacska Valley, but also as a ski centre in northern Slovakia. Developed tourism in the village can be seen on diversified offer of accommodations. A wide range of guest houses can also be found in the nearby village Habovka, where there are also cheaper family pensions. The settlement Oravice located in the north of Rohace is very popular place for vacationers, where the thermal water of swimming pool is main point of interest for visitors.
