The region of Zahorie

The tourist region of Zahorie extends on the west of Slovakia on the border with Austria and the Czech Republic, consisting of river Morava. On the north-east it is bordered by Myjava Upland passing northward to the White Carpathian Mountains. In the east the Little Carpathians forms a notional mountain range that separates Zahorie region from the rest of Slovakia. Zahorie includes districts of Skalica, Senica, Malacky, the southern part of the district Myjava and the part of district Bratislava. The region may also include the southern area, often listed in Bratislava region, where Stupava, Borinka, Marianka, Zahorska Bystrica and Devinska Nova Ves belong.

In tourism the Zahorie has a lot to offer to visitors. The diversity of the region provides an enjoyment in every way and that every visitor will find something interesting for himself. There are beautiful nature, ruins, castles, museums, galleries, and technical folk heritage, but the opportunity for relaxing is offered by the recreational areas, golf courses, and spas. Since the territory of Zahorie lies mostly on Zahorska Lowland, the region has not too rich skiing opportunities. The closest ski resorts are located in the Little Carpathians - in Pezinska Baba and in the resort Modra - Piesok, or toward the north in the district of Myjava at Old Myjava on the slopes of the White Carpathians.

Greater opportunities are from the view of summer hiking, during which varied nature of the Zahorie delights many of hikers and those who like going to nature in their leisure time, whether on foot or on bike. The tangle of hiking trails spreads mainly in the forests between the slopes of the Little Carpathians, in the north part of the White Carpathians, and interesting nature trails can be also found by the Morava River. Right there you will find sought after tourist Bata Canal, just less than 4 km from the town of Skalica in a north-westerly direction, which promises a romantic boat trip and spending a pleasant weekend. It's an attractive area for those who like to explore Slovakia on bike, since the cycle trail leads beside it.

For golf fans there are golf courses near Senica, Malackách, Skalici and Lozorno in the Zahorie region. You can also opt for water recreation, which is provided by recreational areas and centres such as Kunovska reservoir, where you can also easily find accommodation right on the bank of lake. It is located close to Senica, is perfect for spending summer vacation and its vicinity attracts also cyclists. A stay in a recreation area Tomky lying between Borsky Svaty Jur and Studienka, in a pine forest surroundings could also be interesting. Zlatnicka Valley at the foot of the White Carpathians is another popular resort close to Skalica. All these centres are equipped with accommodation capacities in various categories.

Belonging among the major towns of the region, we can name Senica district town, next which the Spa Smrdaky lays, only 7 km away from its centre towards the northwest. The village of Smrdaky known for mineral water, unique in its composition due to the high content of hydrogen sulphide, which is successfully used to treat non-infectious skin diseases and also for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Other important cities, where to stay mostly in hotels, include Malacky, Skalica, Holic, and in the south there is Stupava, often listed into the region of Bratislava.
