Great Fatra Mountains

If you would like to spend a vacation in the mountains, on a place where you have not previously been, maybe this could be the Great Fatra Mountains, belonging to the most beautiful Slovak mountain ranges. The Great Fatra is situated in the northwest of Central Slovakia and is characterized by high main ridge. In the east it neighbours with the Low Tatras and Liptov basin, to the west there lie Turcianska Basin, which the centre of the region Turiec – the town of Martin is located in. In the south it passes into Kremnica Hills and in the southeast to Starohorske Hills. And in the north Choc Mountains are its continuation.

The mountain range spreads out in several tourist regions of Slovakia. Its east side belongs to the region of Liptov where the edge of the Great Fatra the town of Ruzomberok, one of the centres of Liptov, is located. Lying on the west of the mountains, the Turiec region has the most part of the mountain range. To the southeast there is Horehronie with the resort Donovaly where you can stay in a hotel, apartment or cottage. The very northern part of Great Fatra extends into the region of Orava.

From the west side you can get to beautiful long valleys that deserve a visit of hikers. The most famous ones include Jasenska Valley where you will find ski slopes in winter resort with accommodation. Gaderska Valley is probably the most beautiful one, and its mouth is located near the village Blatnica where you can stay if you would like to admire rocky slopes and natural beauty of this 18 km long valley, further bifurcated into two parts. If you go into it, you will go alongside the ruins of the Blatnica Castle and you will get even to the Ostredok (1592 m), which is the highest peak of the Great Fatra. Blatnicka Valley mounts next to Gader Valley, but is only 8 km long and stretches a little further south. Necpalska, Belianska and Kantorska valleys abound with unusual beauty too. Recreational and alpine tourists, cyclists can admire countless picturesque coves and impressive rock scenery that nature created here.

The central part of the mountain is accessible from the north, where Lubochnianska Valley to by the village Lubochna in Liptov region is one of the entering points and the longest valley of these mountains.

A very popular tourist centre of Great Fatra, Hrabovska Valley, also known as Hrabovo is located next to the town of Ruzomberok and is among the most popular holiday resorts of Liptov during the winter due to modern ski resort at the foot of the slope Malino Brdo, and during the summer it is primarily the attractive mountain environment and then various sports and extreme sports attractions, what alures tourists who spend their holidays here. They can stay directly in the valley, where a wide range of accommodation in all types of equipment can be found. There can be booked apartments, hotel rooms as well as cottages for the family or group of friends or colleagues. Skiing in the Great Fatra is possible in the municipality Liptovske Revuce, lying in the Revucka Valley in the east side of mountains, where meets the Low Tatras.

In Great Fatra there were discovered several caves, inhabited even in prehistoric times, but the only Harmanec Cave, located 12 km north of Banska Bystrica, in the southern mountains, is accessible to the public.
