Turiec (Region)

The region of Turiec lies in the northern part of Slovakia in Turčianska Basin, which is bounded by two major mountain ranges - to the west by the Little Fatra Mountains and in the east there are the Great Fatra Mountains. The region includes two district towns, which are also its cultural centres. The first is the city of Martin, situated in the northern part of the basin on the river Turiec. By 1950 the city had a name Turčiansky Saint-Martin and nowadays it is the historic centre of the region, so visitors have the opportunity to see the monument sites on the city tour. Towering over the town to the west, the hills of Little Fatra offers the mountain resort Martinske Hole with a ski area, not far from the city centre.

In the southern part of Turiec, below the foothills of the Great Fatra, there can be found district town of Turčianske Teplice, which is known as a spa town. Spa Turčianske Teplice with a water park, surrounding natural environment and spa hotels providing accommodation, is a good place not only for spa treatment but also for wellness stay as well as an ideal place for relaxation.

In the Turiec region you can find also other recreational and ski resorts with accommodation, mostly located at the edges of the two mountains. 10 km south of the town of Martin, in Little Fatra, close to village Valca, there is the popular tourist resort Valcianska Valley with Ski resort Snowland and accommodation facilities such as hotels and pensions. Other valleys, belonging although to the Velka Fatra Mountains, offer also excellent conditions for hiking and biking. We can name the Gader Valley, Blatnická, Necpalská Valley and near the village of Bela-Dulice there is Belianská and Jasenska Valley, where you can also ski on the slopes of a modern ski resort and also accommodate during your holiday.

The lovers of history and cultural heritage can enjoy interesting features offered by Turiec region. In addition to the monuments of Martin town, there are also ruins, including Blatnica castle, Zniev castle near the village Klastor pod Znievom, and Sklabina castle near the village of Sklabinsky Podzámok. It is right in Turiec region, where you can visit the largest exhibition in nature and that is the open-air Museum of the Slovak Village on the southeast edge of the town of Martin, making the image of the life of people in northwestern Slovakia during the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century. The English parks, which are a nice place for relaxing, surround the manorhouse in Turčianska Štiavnička, as well as the the mansion in Mosovce.

As you can see, the region of Turiec offers to its visitors and vacationers a variety of leisure activities, where is a skiing, a beautiful mountain scenery for tourism, cultural heritage or thermal baths for recovery.
