HLOHOVEC CASTLE

Hlohovec Castle is the most important historical monument of the town Hlohovec. It is located south of Hlohovec, on the edge of a large tree park with french terraces.

The original medieval castle was built in the 11th century. In 1275 King Ladislav IV. donated the castle to the first feudal owner of the Abovcov family. Since then, with little breaks, it belonged with the surrounding lands until 1945 to a powerful feudal family. The Hlohovske castle housed the families Ujlaki, Turzovcov, Forgáčov and Erdődyovcov, who inhabited it until 1945, when the city got Soviet troops. In recent years, no one has resided in the castle and belongs to the town of Hlohovec.
