Maybe you did not know that the Stiavnica Mountains lying in the centre of Slovakia in region of Pohronie (region lying along the Hron river upper basin) are the largest volcanic mountain range in Slovakia. An old mining area is an interesting place for relaxing and vacation in central Slovakia. For its visitors the mountains provide ample opportunities for active rest and tourist attractions. The activities inherently include hiking on the slopes of the Stiavnica Hills, a historical monument, a place to swim in a water park and lake, there are ski slopes and a pleasant rest and relaxation can be enjoyed in a spa.

Undeniably the most important tourist centre of this area, the historic town of Banska Stiavnica is situated in a small valley in the central part of the hills. City with lots of historic buildings and the possibilities for accommodation is included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage UNESCO.

In the surroundings of Banska Stiavnica and throughout the territory of Stiavnica Mountains can be found many marked hiking trails. Among the most popular tourist destinations we can include the highest peak Sitno. Lying at its western foot, the popular recreational resort Pocuvadlo offers a nice place around a lake. It is the most famous of all water reservoirs which the Stiavnica Mountains are known for. These artificial tanks were used in the past in mining work, but now are used for recreation purpose. On the banks of the Pocuvadlo dam surrounded by forests can be found several options for lodging in guesthouses, cottages or even a hotel. Other lakes suitable for summer vacation are located at the village of Stiavnicke Bane, the Big Richnava dam being the most famous among them.

If you belong among the lovers of history, we will be enjoyed by a visit of the village of Svaty Anton where you can take a tour of the manor house. Beautiful nature of the Stiavnica Hills surrounds also the village of Hodrusa-Hamre situated near the town Zarnovica which lies on the western outskirt of the mountains. One of its parts was declared as a conservation zone. At the end of the village, which extends almost to Banska Stiavnica, can be found Hodrusa Dam, as well as modern ski centre Salamandra Resort.

Very popular place to relax in an environment of then mountains, the village of Vyhne is visited by tourists mainly thanks to the water park with thermal water with wellness facilities. Near the resort you can stay in wellness hotels and it is also possible to book an accommodation in guesthouses. Located in the north-western part of the Stiavnica Mountains, the village of Sklene Teplice is known for health spa with a unique thermal cave bath.
