Slnava

Piestany's sea as Slnava dam is called is located on the Vah River next to the town of Piestany. It lies in the northern part of the Danubian Lowland in south-western foot of the mountain range Povazsky Inovec. The spa town of Piestany belongs to the region of Lower Povazie and is situated in western Slovakia. The naming Slnava arose due to the large number of sunny days in the area.

Water reservoir built between 1956-1959 in places, where previously oxbow lakes and wetlands were, lies between Piestany and the village of Drahovce. It has a length of 6.4 km and width is up to 2 km. In the middle of the lake you can see the artificial Bird Island Cajka (Gull), which is registered in UNESCO and is a protected nature reserve because of nesting rare birds.

Slnava Recreation Area is an ideal place for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, rowing and water skiing. The last mentioned sport can be tried out in the village Ratnovce, where the water ski lift is. You can go on a boat tour by ship anchoring at the Colonnade Bridge which connects the city of Piestany with the Spa Island. By the dam you may go for other than water sports. On the asphalt trail with a length of 12 km at the periphery of the dam the cyclists may exaggerate and you can make a romantic stroll around the dam as well. Cultural activities include concerts and festivals taking place on the bank of the lake.

Accommodation possibilities

About a comfortable stay on Slnava will be taken care by various accommodation facilities. At the lake bank and near the dam as well you will find hotels with sports and wellness services. There are also cosy pensions, either directly in Piestany or in the part Banka on the other side of the dam. Among them there are the ones providing comfort for the demanding clients, and those in a lower category which provide cheaper accommodation. Near Slnava, on the Spa Island, there are the world famous Spa Piestany. Here you can stay in luxury spa hotels and choose from the offer of medical stay or wellness stays. Cheap lodging can be found in the campsite.
