Slanske Hills

Slanske Hills belong among the easternmost volcanic mountains in Slovakia. The mountain range is oriented north-south, from Saris region in the north to the border with Hungary towards the south in the length of about 60 km. It is not some of the highest mountain ranges in Slovakia and does not even among the most visited, but with its sublime enchant all hikers. The mountains form the east border of the region Kosice and surroundings lying in the Kosice Basin and separate it from Lower Zemplin which extends in the Eastern Slovak Lowland. The highest peaks - Simonka, Tri Chotare and Cierna Hora tower to a height of over 1,000 meters.

In an environment of predominantly deciduous forest during the wanderings in Slanske hills you will certainly discover interesting places and get to know the lesser known sites in Slovakia. Their unique the Herliansky geyser in the village of Herlany situated on the west side of the mountain, is known for a cold geyser eruption at certain intervals since 1872. On territory of the mountains there is also former opal mines Dubnik.

Belonging among the largest cities near foots of Slanke Hills, the town of Presov is lying at the northern end of the mountain ranges. From Presov you can go directly to the ruins of Zbojnicky Castle standing above the village of Ruska Nova Ves through which a red marked trail leads up the hill to the ruins. From there from the hill a beautiful view of the other surrounding castles which are Kapusany Castle and the place of Saris Castle can be seen. At the mention of the ruins we must mention the Slanecky Castle, remnants of which can be found above the village Slanec. Only tower and some walls were preserve of the Gothic castle from the 13th century.
