The region of Pohronie

Pohronie as the region name suggests stretches along the river Hron, namely in its middle basin. It is located in the centre of Slovakia, southwest from Horehronie region and east of Upper Nitra. Predominant part of the region is mountainous and covered by Kremnica Mountains in the northwest and on south of them there are the Stiavnica hills. The largest town, the historical Zvolen is located in the north-eastern part of the region in Zvolen basin. Probably one of the top centres in the Pohronie, another historical town of Banská Štiavnica is included in the World Heritage Site, and is situated in the middle of Štiavnicke hills. Visitors to the town can see many historical monuments and buildings, in which they can also book an accommodation, as some hotels and hostels offer its premises right in them. It's not just history that Banská Štiavnica offers, but also the surrounding countryside where you can go hiking, but there is also a ski resort nearby. Hiking trails lead to the nearby hill Sitno under which Pocuvadlo resort can be found on the bank of the lake, especially popular in the summer, during which it is possible to swim in it. Several guesthouses, cottages and hotel provide an accommodation herein. Under the opposite foot of the Sitno, 6 km southeast of Banska Štiavnica, lies the village of Svätý Anton, in which the baroque-classical mansion dominates.

If we mentioned swimming, just 12 km from Banska Stiavnica towards the north of the village there is situated the village of Vyhne, sought thanks to Water Park nestled within Štiavnicke hills.

Nor in the region of Pohronie, you will not miss health thermal spas. One can be found in the village of Sklene Teplice in the north-western part of Stiavnica Mountains. Spa Sklene Teplice using healing thermal water beneficial in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system is also ideal for a relaxing and holiday stays. Under the south-western foothills of Kremnica Mountains near the town of Zvolen there are two spa sites, the village of Kováčová with a spa and favourite thermal baths HolidayPark Kováčová, and the town of Sliač, which offers a spa with healing water beneficial for several diseases.

The historic town of Kremnica with a mining and coin history as well as with an attractive surroundings lies on the western foothills of the mountains. In the city you will see historical and technical monuments of the ancient city and you can visit the thermal baths. Nearby the town there can be found two winter resorts in the village Krahule and recreation area Skalka pri Kremnici situated in Kremnica Hills.
