Podbanske

At the place where the High and Western Tatras meet, the mountain village of Podbanske is located below the majestic hill of Krivan. Its average altitude is about 940 meters above sea level. It is among the settlements forming the town of Vysoke Tatry and it is the most westerly of them. Podbanske was founded in 1871, when there were built the first buildings, and its history is connected with mining as the name of the settlement suggests. Part of the settlement belongs to the territory of the municipality of Pribylina which is situated at a distance of 8 km to the southwest from Podbanke.

The mountain resort is an excellent starting point for trips to both the Tatra mountain ranges. High Tatras offers hiking up on the Krivan, you can visit the Koprova Valley forming the border between the West and the High Tatras. The most significant tourist route of the Tatras will lead you to the Strbske Pleso which is the nearest tourist centre eastwards of the village Podbanske. Eastern end of the 72 km long route ends up in Belian Tatras by the Velke Biele Pleso (tarn). Towards the Western Tatras, you can go on the highest peak Bystra, which towers above three valleys, of which Rackova Valley is the most famous. Directly in Podbanske there is a ski resort, but excellent skiing conditions can be found in Strbske Pleso (17 km) on the slopes of Solisko. Rafting down the river Bela flowing along the settlement is an interesting spending of time for lovers of water sports. If you are not tempted by adrenaline activities, just get on a bike or go for a walk on the nearby forest trails and explore this beautiful region. History buffs can visit the Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina where they learn about the lives of people in this region in past time.
