Kosice and surroundings

Tourist region of Kosice and surroundings, otherwise called Abov, is located in the east of Slovakia in the vicinity of Kosice city. Most of its territory lies in the Kosice Basin, which is surrounded by mountains, providing the possibility of hiking and recreation in the mountains.

The city of Kosice with a rich history is the centre of the region and second largest city of the republic. The metropolis of Eastern Slovakia is situated on the banks of the river Hornad in the western part of the Kosice basin. The city has many cultural landmarks. The historic old town with its urban reserve is a delicacy for history buffs. Since it is the heart of the surrounding region and it welcomes every year a large number of visitors, Kosice abounds large capacity of accommodation. The bulk of the accommodation consists of hotels. But let's go also to the surroundings of the town, where you will find excellent conditions for recreation.

Lying toward the west of Kosice, the Slovak Ore Mountains include several units in the region. Mountain range Black Mountain (Cierna Hora) with many hiking trails stretches in the north-west part. Right in these mountains, there is an attractive resort Kavecany visited mainly by residents of Kosice, but visitors from remote location come here too, and just for them there accommodation possibilities. In winter, the resort is popular due ski area with excellent conditions for downhill and cross-country skiing, and during the summer the surrounding countryside attracts tourists here. Summer attractions include a bobsled and zoo.

Surrounded by dense forests and hills of Cierna Hora, the water reservoir Ruzin, also know as Ruzinska dam on the river Hornad, is popular place for summer holiday. Lying around it, the centres right on the banks of the dam or in its vicinity offers various recreational facilities, pensions and cottages.

The next mountain range extending on west of Kosice Basin, again with excellent opportunities for hiking and skiing, the Volovec Mountains are located south of Black Mountain. The hills of Slanske Mountains tower on the east of the basin. Nevertheless, they are not among the most famous mountains in Slovakia, there are many interesting places where the hiking trails will lead you.
