Horehronie

Horehronie region, situated in the centre of Slovakia, is one of the most attractive tourist regions, where you will find many interesting sites to visit during your holiday. It lies along the upper Hron River and extends on the east from the village Telgárt to the village Hronsek on the west. In the north it extends to the main ridge of the Low Tatras, offering for visitors of the region beautiful nooks and attractive places for hikers. The territory of the region belongs to the district of Banská Bystrica and Brezno which are the main cultural centres of the region.

Throughout the year you will find tourist attractions, in summer it is mainly the beauty of nature and various monuments and in winter ski resorts scattered around the region, mainly on the slopes of the Low Tatras, or Kremnicke hills.

The main tourist centre of Horehronie, the county historical town Banska Bystrica is also one of the largest cities in Slovakia. It offers many cultural and historical monuments, which include a variety of sacred buildings, townhouses mainly concentrated in the historic centre of the city. Hotels and hostels in every category welcome visitors with various service offerings.

In the vicinity of Banska Bystrica there are great opportunities for hiking, skiing and other opportunities for leisure. If you go northward, you come to Donovaly recreation area, located between three mountain ranges. Low Tatras stretches eastward, in the northwest there is Great Fatra, and Starohorské hills are towrds the southwest. Well-equipped winter resort Donovaly is a paradise for skiers in each category. You can visit it also in summer, when the resort offers a variety of attractions or you can go to the surrounding countryside and forests. The resort enjoys a great offer of accommodation, which includes apartments, guesthouses, and there are also several hotels and a wide choice of cottages where you can spend a pleasant holiday in the mountains. Westwards from Banska Bystrica there are Kremnicke hills hiding some tourist centres such as Kraliky, Tajov or Kordíky.

Brezno, located towards the east of Banska Bystrica, is the second largest city in Horehronie. Its attractive location on the southern foothills of the Low Tatras makes it a desirable city and a tourist centre of the region. In the town you can visit the Horehronske museum, or go to the surroundings where you find popular year-round recreational and tourist resorts, which are located mainly in the north in the Low Tatras territory. Myto pod Dumbierom with attractive ski area is the nearest village, and then it is also a recreational area Tale, which offers both winter as well as summer activities. Not far from it, to the west there is another tourist resort, and resort Krpáčovo, popular throughout the year, whereas in winter you can ski and in summer it is the nature that attracts vacationers here. We can not forget the resort Chopok South, which is part of the resort Jasna - one of the most desirable tourist centres in Slovakia. Chopok is one of the highest hills of the Low Tatras and belongs to the main ridge of the mountains. Several hotels and lodges can be found on its southern slope, but the main part of the resort with lots of accommodations, belonging to the region Liptov, is on its north side.

Another mountain range, which extends into the territory of the region, Veporske Mountains are located in the southern part of Horehronie. Just below the slopes of this mountains you will find Brusno village, where you can immerse in healing waters of Spa Brusno.
