Gemer

Gemer can be considered one of the most beautiful tourist regions of Slovakia, which ranks it among the regions as Liptov, Orava and Spis. It is extending in the south of the interface between central and eastern Slovakia. The region attracts tourists for its unique natural beauty and historical monuments.

On territory of Gemer there are karst areas with some public caves. In the south of the region near the border with Hungary, there can be found mountain range Slovak Karst with a national park, where you can visit several significant karst caves. The town of Roznava, which is the main tourist centre of Gemer, offers to its visitors the opportunity to see the sights in the historic centre. The city is a good starting point for hikes in the Slovak Karst, as well as to the Krasna Horka Castle, towering above the village Krasnohorske Podhradie.

The Gemer includes also the southern part of the Slovak Paradise National Park, situated in the north of the region. It is just a paradise for tourists who can admire waterfalls, gorges, cliffs, and visit Dobsinska Ice Cave, as well as to ski in winter or recreate in summer on the bank of the water reservoir Palcmanska Masa situated next to the village of Dedinky. Another attractive mountain range in Gemer, the Muran Plateau offers countless opportunities for hiking, biking and excellent conditions for mountain climbing. The ruins of Muran Castle belong among the most visited tourist destinations on Muran Plateau. Other the important centres of Gemer include the district town of Rimavska Sobota, lying on the northern margin of Cerova Upland. 12 km northeast of Rimavska Sobota, there can be found the resort Teply vrch (Warm Hill) with a water reservoir perfect for a summer holiday by the water. The reservoir with the warmest water among Slovak dams offers swimming, fishing, as well as accommodation in recreational facilities.

Not even the region of Gemer lacks thermal healing water and that can be found in the small village Ciz, 8 km away from the border with Hungary. The only spa with iodine mineral water in Slovakia lies in one of the warmest sites in Slovakia. Iodine health spa Ciz surrounded by park has an outside pool complex, as well as sauna world.
