Lower Nitra region

If it is not a priority for you to spend your holidays in Slovakia in the mountain area, one option could be to visit the region with a predominantly lowland character - Lower Nitra region, located in the southern part of Western Slovakia. The stay in Lower Nitra can be spent by visiting cultural and historical sites, but the tourists come in region for recreation by water or thermal water which thermal baths offer. You can stay here either in the district towns, where you will find mostly hotels and guesthouses, but in recreational areas near the thermal spa there is a number of private accommodation, family pensions and lodges and cottages for rent.

Tourist region of Lower Nitra is named after the Nitra River, which flows through the centre of the whole region. Most of its territory lies on the Danubian Hills, only the southern part is in the Danubian Lowland. It's mostly a flat region, but in the north Tribeč mountain range stretching from the town of Nitra extends to it. In the northeast of the region by the town of Zlate Moravce, the mountain Pohronský Inovec begins the southwest outshoot of Stiavnica hills also and belongs to it. These mountains provide hiking trails for tourists.

The region includes districts of Nitra, Zlate Moravce, the western part of the district of Levice and the northern part of the district of Nove Zamky. The mentioned district towns are the main cultural centre of the Lower Nitra. Region's largest city is the county historical town of Nitra, where, among other sights worth visiting, can be found Nitra castle - one of the oldest monuments of the region. If you would like to stay in Nitra for more days, hotels and pensions in particular will offer an accommodation, but there is also a hostel for tourists.

Speaking of history and castles, we may recommend the visit of Castle in the town of Levice, which holds annually a castle festival. The ruins of Oponický castle can be found in the Tribec Mountains near the village Oponice and ruins Gýmeš are towering near the village of Jelenec. Do not miss the visit of Topolcianky Castle situated at the foot Tribeč north of Zlate Moravce. In Topolcianky there is also a national centre for farming and breeding horses in Slovakia - Stud Farm, where you can take a ride in a carriage or horse riding.

Lower Nitra is a popular place for a holiday thanks to the thermal baths. Especially during the summer season the Podhájska village is a popular place for swimming. It attracts visitors from Slovakia but also from Czech Republic thanks to the thermal swimming pool with exceptional thermal water. Near the town of Nitra in the village of Polny Kesov there is another pool ThermalKesov, and Emil Tatárik Thermal Baths in the town Nove Zamky. And yet we could mention the resort Margita-Ilona close to Levice.

We could draw the attention of Nature lovers to Arboretum Mlynany in the village Tesarske Mlynany. A large area includes the park, where you can admire hundreds of species of plants from all over the world and spend a pleasant time here walking paths leading in through the park.

We did mention here only some of the interesting places that you can visit and where it pays to look at in Lower Nitra, but certainly we did not mention everything. Just choose where and how you would like to spend your vacation and find your accommodation at the place of your stay.
