Vihorlat Mountains

Easternmost mountain range in Slovakia formed by volcanic activity, the Vihorlat Mountains are extending on the boundary of the regions of Lower Zemplin and Upper Zemplin. They are among the most pristine volcanic mountains of Slovakia, also in the context of plant and animal species. They are characterized by dense forests and primeval forests occurrence. On the north the neighbour with other mountain ranges which include Low Beskids and Bukovske Hills. Surrounding region of Lower Zemplin, south of the mountains, is not as mountainous as there is Eastern Slovak Lowland stretching even to the borders with Hungary.

The Protected area Vihorlat with national nature monuments and reservations forms most of the mountains territory. One of the most wooded Slovak mountains offering stunning sceneries and quiet places surrounded by forests attracts more and more tourists, for whom there is extensive network of marked hiking trails. They will lead you also to the most popular sites including highest Peak Vihorlat with a height of over 100 meters above sea level, Sea eye (Morske Oko) - a sprawling lake surrounded by forests and natural monument Sninsky Stone. The will lead you through forests, such as Kyjovsky forest or Vihorlat primeval forest extending by the main ridge and which is included together with the Ukrainian forests to UNESCO.

Vihorlat surrounding region is characterized by diversity and variety, clean air and unique flora and fauna. It gives excellent conditions not only for hiking, but also for water recreation thanks to the popular summer destination - reservoir Zemplinska Sirava lying right at the southern foot of Vihorlat Mountains. Zemplinska Sirava with its recreation centres offers hotels, guest houses and other small facilities where you can stay during you holiday. The most significant centres on the bank of the dam include Kaluza, Klokocov, Horka or even the village of Vinne near which you will find another dam – the Vinne Lake becoming in summer ideal for swimming, water sports and relaxing by the water.

You can go hiking from the northern edge of the mountain, where the villages Zemplinske Hamre, Bela nad Cirochou and Kamenica nad Cirochou lie. It is near the northern foothills where the two largest cities of surrounding area, Snina and Humenne can be found. From the south, the villages Remetske Hamre, Poruba nad Vihorlatom and resorts of Zemplinska Sirava as well as the village of Vinne from where you can go towards the castle ruins Viniansky Castle are good starting point for tours to the mountain range.
