Prešov, museums and technical monuments

Slovak opal mines can be found in eastern Slovakia on the territory of Slanské vrchy. They are situated 20 km southeast of Prešov, between the villages of Červenica and Zlatá Baňa. Opal mines have been known around the world since the 16th century. The largest opal called Harlequin was found in 1775 in a stream in the village of Červenica. Its weight is almost 600 grams. The Sándor Márai Memorial Exhibition was opened January 22, 2019. The Sándor Márai Memorial Room was opened on the ground floor of the house in May 1998 and has since been the scene of several exhibitions featuring the life and work of the city’s famous native son. The humble memorial room has now been expanded to accommodate a unique exhibition whose ambition is to pay homage to Sándor Márai’s memory in the city that played a central part in his life. 

National  Cultural Monument,  this building  is unique in Slovakia, it combined  elements  of  the Early-Renaissance typical  for areas north of  Alps with the fading  out of  Late-Gothic artistic  and architectural  details.
