Little Fatra Mountains

Little Fatra (Mala Fatra) is part of the Western Carpathians and is located in the region of Žilina in north-western Slovakia. It is the fourth highest mountain range in Slovakia and a large part of it is occupied by National Park Mala Fatra, which extends into four districts - Zilina, Ruzomberok, Dolny Kubin and Martin.

The area of Little Fatra region with its beautiful nature, extensive hiking trails and opportunities for cycling is a popular winter and summer tourist site. The holiday in Mala Fatra inherently include hiking. Lusty tourists can enjoy many attractions, accessible not only for recreation but also eager tourists. Probably most alluring tourist trail leads through the top ridge of the mountain, which by its nature is the most beautiful ridge in Slovakia.

Everyone who loves to admire the beauty of nature during bike ride will be satisfied in Little Fatra. Only recently there were marked bicycle paths around Terchova where challenging and also recreational cyclists can enjoy more than 600 km of routes of varying difficulty, beginning and ending just in Terchova, in a beautiful natural setting.

On the territory of Mala Fatra, the enthusiasts of historical monuments can visit several castles and ruins, which include Strecno, Starhrad or Kunerad castle. In the city of Žilina and its surroundings there are still two more. On the outskirts of the city, directly at the mouth of the river Kysuca flowing to the river Vah, there is Budatín castle, previously serving as a guard castle. Unquestionably the most extensive ruins in Slovakia, the remains of Lietava castle is however situated at the western foothills, and belongs rather to Súľov Hills.

Would you like to learn the most famous resorts in the Little Fatra offering interesting attractions in the winter and summer? Probably the most visited site, the village of Terchová with adjoining recreation centre in the Vratna valley offers enchanting hiking trails and winter sports opportunities. The Janosik holes with their canyons, rock walls, ladders and gurgling brooks creating beautiful waterfalls are a popular place for tourists who stay in Terchova in some guest house, hotel or in one of many privates. Other tourist destinations in surroundings include hills as Chleb, Large Krivan and Large Rozstutec towering over Terchova. Offering beautiful views of the mentioned hills as well as accommodation in lodges and guest houses, Zázrivá village is also a good starting point for the beauties of Little Fatra. Belonging also in the mountains area, the tourist resort Martinske hole, also called Martinky, is located in the mountains near the town of Martin, which is the centre of the region Turiec. The nature and hiking lovers as well as the skiers will also love this resort. Still further to south near the village of Valca, there is Valcianska Valley, where on the slopes of Mala Fatra can be found excellent skiing conditions with accommodation close to tow, but it is not just a winter vacation that you will enjoy there. In summer it becomes the starting point for hikes into the mountains and there is also held various events. Well, and in the end, on the border between the Malá Fatra Mountains and Strážov Hills, there can be found one more resort - Fačkovské saddle, where you can also stay during skiing or hiking.
