Javorniky - Maple Mountains

Located in northwestern Slovakia, the mountain range Javorniky is a popular destination for winter as well as for summer tourism. They lie near the border with the Czech Republic, where the mountains continue into Turzovská Upland on the north. The mountains neighbours with Kysuce Upland in the east and with White Carpathians in the south. Almost the entire territory of the mountain range belongs to the region of Upper Povazie, while the northern part extends into the region of Kysuce.

Duration of snow cover in Maple Mountains sometimes takes up to 150 days, whereas the first snow showers occur as early as mid-October and the winter season sometimes lasts until May. Here you will also find the highest peak of Great Javornik with a height of 1071 metres above sea level. Located at the very northern part of Javorniky, the town of Cadca is one of the centres of the region of Kysuce. This part of the mountains includes also the town of Kysucke Nove Mesto. We're already on the northeast edge and if we go further to south, we come to the county town of Zilina to which the Maple Mountains stretch. Going downstream the Vah River, into which the mountain slopes extends, we get into town of Bytca where it pays to see the sights.

If you decide to spend your vacation in the Javorniky Mountains, you can stay in a mountain hotel as well in plenty of guesthouses. Families with children sometimes prefer accommodation in a cottage situated in some mountain resort or right at a ski lift.
