The region of Lower Zemplin

The region of Lower Zemplin lies in the south of Eastern Slovakia near the border with Hungary and Ukraine. In the north it is bordered by the Upper Zemplin from which it is partially separated by Vihorlat hills, and towards west of it, on the other side of Slanske Hills, there is the region of Kosice and surroundings with the eastern Slovak metropolis – the town of Kosice. Almost the entire area of ​​Lower Zemplin is located in the Eastern Slovak Lowland, giving the region's lowland character.

Who comes to visit the Lower Zemplin during the summer season, he could not miss the most significant tourist centre of the whole region, the Zemplinska Sírava becoming annually a place for summer holiday by lake for thousands of visitors. Due to its large area it also called Slovak sea. On the bank of the dam there are plenty of accommodations, including hotels of different categories, guesthouses and smaller objects, such as cottages. There are also sports facilities, outdoor swimming pools and water slides. Kaluza lying on the north bank is the largest resort of the Zemplinska Sirava recreation area.

You can also spend your vacation by Vinianske Lake, only a short walk from Zemplinska Sirava. It is located near the village of Vinne, under the southern slopes of Vihorlat Mountains, and here you will find accommodation on the bank of lake as well. If you would like to go for hiking or nature walk, you can get it direct to the ruins Viniansky Castle, standing on a hill northwest of the village. All the ruins, which have remained from the castles of Lower Zemplin, are a popular place visited by tourists.

One of the largest cities of the region, Michalovce is an interesting town from the view of sacred monuments. Here you will find preserved Romanesque rotunda, mansion in the historic area of ​​the city, or even the Roman Catholic and Greek-Catholic Church. The mansions are significant part of the monuments in Lower Zemplin. Renaissance manor house on the outskirts of Borsa village, Buttkay mansion in the village Budkovce, Renaissance mansion in the middle of the village Streda nad Bodrogom or the mansion of Majláth family in Pribenik are worth visiting.

The district town of Trebisov, another significant city of Lower Zemplin, is lying near the east side of Slanske Hills which is providing opportunities for recreation and relaxation in a mountain area. Even in Trebisov you can visit several monuments, including mansion currently serving as the History Museum, the Gothic church, or Paric ruins on the outskirts of the city.

In the south there is an important Slovak wine region, and that is the Tokaj wine region with excellent quality wines. Tokaj Wine Route currently connects various villages and wine producers.
