The High Tatras are the highest mountains of Slovakia. They lie on the north, creating the border with Poland. It is divided to Western and Eastern Tatras. The highest peak of the High Tatras is the Gerlachovsky peak that perks to the height of 2655 metres. This is the only Alpine-character mountain in Slovakia. It occupies rather a small territory; with its crest with the length of only 26 km and 32 valleys it belongs to the smallest alps of the world.
The region of the High Tatras that lies in the regions of Poprad and partially Kežmarok, is, in its most attractive part, part of the Tatra National Park. Despite this, wide opportunities for summer and winter tourism are offered here. During summer, this is mainly alpine tourism, cyclo-tourism, during winter skiing, but also fishing, hunting, bathing, wellness, horse riding, bobsleighway, sledding, ice-skating, getting to know the history as well as the traditions and handicrafts of the region. The region is famous also for its spas, aimed particularly at curing respiratory diseases.
